The cattle herd at Twin Pines is comprised of moderate framed, Angus and Lim-Flex cows. Ten years ago when I returned to the farm fresh out of Colorado State with a degree in Animal science my plan was to build a herd of Limousin/Angus cross cows. My intention has always been to use Lim-Flex bulls on this cow herd to produce quality beef from this cross. After seeing the progeny produced from crossing the crossbreds I have been disappointed in the consistency resulting from this plan. Some of the calves come out looking more Angus type, some more Limousin type and some in between. I believe that the reason for this is mainly the high degree of variance in type that has been used to produce Lim-Flex cattle. I also believe that if I switch to a straight bred maternal Angus female that is smaller in frame and more efficient than the crossbred cows, and breed them to larger framed, heavy muscled limousin terminal sires I can produce more a more consistent calf crop more profitably. In 2008 the first step was taken to achieve this goal, with the purchase of a linebred Shoshone bull from Meadow View Ranch in Broken Bow, Nebraska.
